Last Nite

Following a few relaxing days in Providence, today I set off for Atlanta. It was a very long and very rainy drive today. I'm halfway there(somewhere in Virginia). I got here just in time for a short run, bowl of cereal, blog, and bed. It is amazing how much driving can take out of you. All you are doing is sitting there but the mental concentration required to drive for hours on end can easily exhaust you. Highlights of the music I listened to on the way down were: Aerosmith, Neil Young, The Strokes, The Who, and Radiohead.

Here is my first music/music video review. I'm planning to do a lot of these. Most of them will be old favorites of mine. However, soon I hope to start hunting down some fresh music, which I haven't really been doing for the past couple months.

This song makes me want to:
Beat Christina Aguilera with a golf club.
The Strokes-Last nite from f3RxuS on Vimeo.

This video was a serious breakthrough for my music development. I first saw this video when it came out in 2001 on MTV. At the time I hated literally all modern music and listened to absolutely nothing that was recorded post 95'. At the time MTV was infested with untalented hacks. The rapper with an entourage and crude lyrics, the pretty boy groups that sang songs written by record label producers, the blonde with big tits and an awful voice, they could all find themselves at the top of the TRL chart. This video by The Strokes was nothing short of a giant breath of fresh air. This is a group that was not afraid to market themselves through a live music video. No flashy cloths, sexy dancers, or fancy camera work. These guys looked like they all just woke up from sleeping on a basement sofa. Where every other music video looks like it was manufactured by a pop-culture-making-machine, any imperfection in this video makes them shine. They weren’t particularly original at the time but the style they emanated was just what the music world needed. This video restored my faith in modern music.

That's all for now.

The Sun is Always Setting in Philadelphia

Following yesterday's bit of excitement, I set out on my drive to Providence. I was walking out the front door of the hotel and a girl at the age of around 9 came up to me and politely asked, "Excuse me, do you work for Ghost Hunters?" She must have overheard me while I was checking out. "I certainly do," I replied. Her eyes immediately lit up and she proceeded to jump up and down giggling and saying "Oh my gosh, I love Ghost Hunters, its my favorite show!" Her mother quickly handed me a pad of paper and a pen.  Truthfully, I think I might have walked away slightly more excited about the interaction than the little girl( who now has a piece of Renaissance Hotel paper saying, "Lucy, All the Best, Charlie Dewey- Peekaboo!:-o"  I've never before been asked for my autograph, and I held my head high for the rest of the day.

Yesterday evening there was a very odd clustering of clouds to the west in a mostly clear sky.  It played tricks with the daylight so it seemed like the sun was setting for 3 hours which made for a fairly pleasant ride to Providence. I tried to get a good picture of the skyline in Philadelphia, but after I was nearly sideswiped by a tractor trailer I decided to keep my eyes on the road.
Other than some minor roadwork traffic in Connecticut it was pretty smooth sailing. Listened to some good tunes to pass the time:  My Morning Jacket, Pink Floyd, Mogwai, and some Derek and the Dominoes. For me the highlight of the playlist was a song called, "Crying Song" from Pink Floyd's album  More(1969). It portrays a very delicate side to Floyd that often goes overlooked. Here is a cool video that I found for the song(which pertains to recent events).

That’s all for now.

Whodunit?

Today there was a minor fiasco at work.  At some point last night one or several vagrants looted 2 of our vans that were in the hotel parking lot and walked away with around $10,000 worth of equipment.   I suspected that it was an inside job by someone from the hotel staff. After the police came and made their investigation.  I went up to my room and did a little investigating of my own.  I devised several unthinkable scenarios, each one more unthinkable than the next.  Who could it have been?
Could it have been the Concierge, who had access to our personal information and knew our itinerary?
Could it have been the bartender, who overheard the crew talking about how pricey cameras were getting, and was probably angry because I forgot to tip him at the end of the night on Saturday?
Could it have been the maid, who had access to our rooms and thus the keys to the vans, and was probably a little disgruntled because she had to take apart that fort I made?
No, no, no.  My prime suspect was the busboy.  Whenever the crew was loading up into the vans, he was always out back grabbing a smoke.  Him and his shifty eyes.  He saw all the equipment that was going into the vans and decided to capitalize on the opportunity.  That’s our man.
I immediately dashed to the lobby and asked the front desk for the name of the busboy, at which point they told me that the police had found some of the stolen goods in the parking lot of a hotel down the road.  This pretty much threw all my theories into the wind. Apparently the bandits had also raided vehicles at the other hotel and found better stuff than our equipment, so they dumped it.  A multi-vehicle multi-location heist seemed a little out of my league.  So I dropped the case.
There will be other days for the Great Dewey Detective.
That’s all for now.

Snow Day

This morning I woke up humming Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker”. I haven’t heard that song in five years...............pfff....I dunno.

This morning the electricity was out at the hotel. While I was getting ready for work in the dark it felt a little bit like a snow day; walked around with a flashlight, checked outside to see how many inches were on the ground, subconsciously flipped the light switch in the bathroom even though I knew the power was out. When I got to the hotel lobby, the lights flickered on and everyone in the lobby cheered. Everybody needs power; the early morning businessmen who could finally have that hot cup of coffee that was essential to their day¸ the airport-bound guests who wanted to check their flight status at the hotel 'Business Center', the front desk employees who no longer had to answer to irate patrons complaining about having cold showers. I cheered as well, but for some reason at the same time my heart sank. It was the same feeling that I would get after waking up to snow on my windowsill, leaping out of bed, sprinting to the kitchen, only to hear my mom say that school wasn’t canceled.

Needless to say, school wasn’t canceled! It was a very long day at work. For the past week we have been filming at a Revolutionary War fort in Philadelphia called Fort Mifflin(in my head I call it Fort Dunder Mifflin). The highlight for me was visiting the dungeon where British soldiers were kept. It was less like a dungeon and more like a hole in the ground that tunneled into a hillside. The prisoners were kept underground for days with nothing but a 2X4 inch window for air ventilation. Ghost Hunters was there to investigate several reports of ghost sightings. I ain’t seen no floatin’ red-coats down there, but I’ll tell you that going into a pitch black underground dungeon in the dead of night will make your spine tingle a bit.
I still think the fort that I made is better.

Tomorrow is my last day of work here in Phillie. Then I will be heading to Providence for a few days to take care of some business, meet up with friends, and hold up a jewelry store. That’s all for now!

Dew the Dew

First off I’d like to say that I appreciate your interest and welcome your support for Just Dewey It. In my 22 years of living, I have learned that my biggest priority in life is self-improvement. There have always been things in my life that have motivated me to strive to become a better human; friends, family, career aspirations, watermelon eating contest, etc. I always find that I am happiest when I am taking the steps to improve myself. This blog is one of those steps. From it, I hope to become a better writer, critic, researcher, and illusion artist.
One could ask, ‘If this is just for your own purposes, Charlie, then why don’t you keep all this malarkey to yourself?’. All I can say is this. Yes I realize I am an egotistical prick for putting so much effort into telling other people about my life. But bottom line, my parents spent $150,000 on an English degree that exists only in my brain. So if I don’t know how to write something worth reading, I might as well just castrate myself and become a monk, or take massive amounts of Enzyte and join the porno industry. One or the other, because frankly in either situation I would be serving the world better than being another chump polluting the internet with mindless drabble.
To give a brief life update, I graduated from Providence College last May.  Following graduation, I moved down to Long Island where I lived with my grandfather.  During the week I worked in New York City as a production/locations assistant on various movies/ TV shows(Ugly Betty, Law and Order, Remember Me).  On the weekends I visited family at various locations on Long Island, visited my brother in the city, and went on excursions with my grandfather.  I will be sure to post some journal entries detailing some of the adventures I had living with my grandfather.
I am currently working as a CPA(Camera Production Assistant) for the next two months on a cable show called Ghost Hunters.  We will be traveling to various places along the east coast.  So far I am really enjoying it.
At the moment, it is my day off and I am hanging out in the fort that I built in my hotel room. I figured that this would be a perfect time to start the blog I have been putting off all summer!

Certainly not my best work. A little sloppy, but
I think I did well with what I had to work with.  Notice the blinds usage.
That's it for now. Thank you for your support and please leave comments.
